크리스마스, 연말 분위기 음악

어느새 날씨가 점점 추워져 옷을 두툼하게 입고 다니는 계절이 왔네요. 2019년 12월, 벌써 12월입니다. 아이고 추워라.
시간은 속절없이 흐르는 기분과 여러 연말 모임도 있지만 크리스마스가 빠질 수는 없죠. 싱숭생숭, 들뜬 기분인 반면 우울한 기분도 들겠죠. 크리스마스를 어떻게 보낼지 계획은 있으신지 모르겠네요. 가족과 연인과 친구들과 함께 보내시겠죠. 연말 분위기에는 역시 크리스마스 관련 노래들을 빼놓을 수 없죠.

바로크 시대의 작곡가 조지 프레드릭 헨델이 작곡한 오라토리오 메시아다. 작사가는 찰스 제넨스이다. 기독교 절기에 오라토리오는 성경의 내용 기반으로 오페라 대신 만들었다. 오페라와 다르게 배우의 연기는 없다. 헨델은 이 메시아를 24일 만에 작곡하였고, 총 연주시간은 약 2시간 30분이다. 복음서, 이사야서, 시편 등 성경의 내용을 찬양하며 종교의 의미를 담고 있다. 1부는 예언과 탄생, 2부는 예수의 고난, 3부는 부활과 영생으로 이루어져 있다. 할렐루야 합창곡은 2부에 속해있다. 기독교에서 사순절, 부활절뿐만 아니라 12월 31일 송구영신예배에 각 교회에서 많이 울러 퍼지고 있습니다. 어떻게 세월이 흘러도 사랑을 받는지 정말 대단하고 영광스럽고 용기를 가지게 하는 웅장하고 경건한 곡입니다.

영국 리베라 소년 합창단이 부르는 carol of the bells은 유튜브 추천으로 들어보게 되었는데요. 영화 나 홀로 집에 나왔던 곡이라고 합니다. 몇 번을 봤는데 왜 생각이 잘 안 나네요. 우크라이나의 슈체드리크 (풍요한 저녁)라는 제비와 관련된 풍년을 기원하는 민속 노래를 바탕으로 Mykola Leontovych가 편곡했다. 우크라이나 출신 작곡가 Peter Wilhousky가 영어 가사만 붙여 지금의 Carol of the bells가 되었다.
